New battery Toyota: 800 km driving range, cheaper and faster charging
Toyota wants to launch an electric car with a range of 800 kilometers in 2026. The EV will have a new battery, which is not only cheaper but can also be charged in 20 minutes.
Toyota has previewed the new batteries that will be in its next generation of EVs.This concerns four improved batteries: three with liquid electrolyte, which is common in EVs, and one new solid state battery.
Toyota is improving energy density, charging speeds and production costs in the new batteries.“We will need different options for batteries, just like we have different variants of engines,” said Toyota CEO Takero Kato.
The three batteries with liquid electrolyte are named Performance, Popularized and High Performance. The Performance batteries will be the first to be installed in Toyota EVs, from 2026. They are lighter and 20 percent cheaper to produce than the batteries in the current bZ4X. The Performance battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes and enables a range of 800 kilometers.
The batteries will become another 10 percent cheaper in the following years and a driving range of a thousand kilometers will become possible. The Popularization batteries should have a 40 percent lower cost, which would make an electric Toyota possible for less than 30,000 euros. This type has a driving range of about 600 kilometers.
Toyota wants to introduce its first electric car with a solid-state battery from 2027, which will have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers and can be charged in 10 minutes. With the second generation of that battery, which will be released after 2028, the driving range will even be more than 1,200 km, but other details have not yet been announced.
